Hey there. Thanks for stopping by! I’m Kara Ann and I am HANGRY for real food.
Growing up as a child of a cardiologist and a registered dietitian I feel like I was taught a lot about what eating healthy meant. Back in the 90’s and early 00’s “healthy” looked a lot like low-fat — low-fat yogurt, low-fat crackers, low-fat “butter” – just about anything you could think of was available in “low-fat”. My mom did a lot of cooking but the few things she would buy us as treats, think chips ahoy chocolate chip cookies, were definitely purchased in the low-fat variety. The message was clear – fat = bad.
I will say, other than the low-fat everything, my mom mostly cooked real, whole foods and I didn’t think too much about what I was putting into my body. We definitely weren’t raised on lunchables or capri sun pouches so I did know a bit about eating well. Fast-forward to college when I was no longer competitively swimming and had to really make all my own food choices for the first time ever. I had no idea how to feed myself properly. I remember buying Annie’s brand pizza rolls at the market in my dorm and considering that a “healthy” meal because they were organic.
I guess my point here is there are so many conflicting opinions and trends as to what is healthy. From low-fat, to organic, to gluten-free, I think that people hear these “buzzwords” and assume that they mean “healthy”. (Hey no judgment here, I totally did the same). What does healthy even mean really? Well that’s why I’m here and started this blog.
My goal is to share what I have learned about food and wellness and to empower you to make your own decisions on what fits into YOUR healthy lifestyle. I want to sort out some of the confusion on different types of eating styles and the current trends in the healthy-eating community. I’m not a chef by any means, so don’t expect gourmet recipes that you might find on a food blog. This is more general health and wellness tips and how I strive to lead a healthy life while maintaining balance.
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy!
